I found myself wondering today how the word empowered is defined. I know what I think of it meaning, but I was curious how others define the word. Here are some of the definitions I found:
From Merriam Webster
having the knowledge, confidence, means, or ability to do things or make decisions for oneself
make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights
the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life and claiming one's rights
What I noticed in these definitions were some very important key words:
claiming one's rights/making decisions for oneself
becoming stronger/make (someone) stronger
These words were central to what I would have said if someone asked me what it meant to be empowered. Someone who is confident in their own ability to make decisions and strong enough to make them.
You may have seen my posts recently on social media. I posted an image that defines why I called my business EDIT Learning & Design. When I think about how we learn and grow, I think the first step is to feel empowered. To know you CAN do this and you do have the ability to make decisions about your life experience.
Whether the person who is learning is an individual, a new employee, or part of a team, all individuals should feel empowered to learn and grow. This is the first step in them achieving their goals and designing the life they love.
I challenge you to empower yourself to reach for your goals, dreams and aspirations. What would you chose for your own life if you empowered yourself to reach for your ultimate dream?
I want you to ask yourself these questions when you think about your own goals or the goals you have for your team:
What steps can I take to move forward towards my goals?
What can I do to achieve a favorable outcome?
What do I believe about myself and my goals?
What am I personally responsible for?
What is preventing me from feeling empowered?
